About
Hey there! I'm David Ross!
I'm from Littleton, Colorado and grew up loving the outdoors. During the summer after my Junior year of high school, I went on an “Outward Bound”. The 23 day backpacking trip in the mountains of Colorado had a profound impact on my life journey. Living every sunrise and sunset high in the alpine, I knew I would love to pursue a life somehow, in the mountains.
My freshman year in college was fun, but I came to realize my path wasn’t to be the standard route. So I left school to pursue my outdoor passion and moved to Vail, CO to snowboard and live the mountain life. Soon after moving up, I got into art! I really enjoyed drawing and painting but bounced around different jobs and eventually had to move back down. Back at home, I found a job teaching preschool! I came to realize that I loved teaching kids and had a bunch of fun with them! I actually met my future wife and her two kids while teaching and I started going back to school for art! I did ceramics, painting, drawing and more. We ended up having a daughter together while I completed my graphic design degree. I even wrote some kids books for them. I self published, sold a bunch and you can now find them on Amazon! Little did I know then, that photography would become my other passion.
After graduating, I got a job with an art and framing company that sold framed art to businesses and stores around the west. I figured if I wanted to be a successful artist, I needed to learn to actually sell art! We had nice pieces and I was able to do well enough to have my wife stay home after we had my second daughter. I enjoyed working in all the beautiful mountain towns but I was still selling other artists work. I had designed some cool graphic t-shirts and was pursuing a clothing business when my son was born.
We now had 5 kids so I was extra motivated to find a way to even better support my growing family. I finally decided to also improve the business I was already doing well in. So, when I was in Aspen, CO on a sales trip during the amazing fall colors, I got a decent camera and began my hunt for great photographs of the west. That was in the fall of 2012. The art company put my shots into extra frames and I started selling my own work! I was still pursuing my other art like the kids books and t-shirts, but in the fall of 2014, I captured the image that really put my photography on the map.
I left the family at home at two in the morning and got up to catch the sunrise at the famous Maroon Bells. The storm was supposed to clear out but the clouds were still hanging around the majestic peaks. Suddenly the sun shot through and lit them with a bright early morning light. It was incredible. The sun then started pinching back into the clouds and left a streak of sunrise “fire” burning of the mountain. Just at that moment, the wind stilled and I caught the reflection in the lake below. I call the shot “Bells on Fire” and it became the piece that has most helped me live my dream of raising my family with my artwork.
Many years, cameras, and thousands of pictures later, these pages showcase all of my favorites! Magical conditions have continued to happen while out shooting, so I finally realized that I’m destined to be a photographer! I hope you enjoy this gallery site and please feel free to Shop on Fine Art America.
Early in my photography career, I found out about Sony cameras and the mirrorless technology. I learned about taking high dynamic range shots and was able to bring the beauty of nature, back to life for the wall! My art distributor has published many of my favorite shots, so I sell signed, limited edition prints through stores around the Rocky Mountain Region. Feel free to contact me to see what's available.
I now live in Conifer, Colorado with my wife and kids. I love playing disc golf, backpacking, snowboarding, mountain biking, playing with my kids and our new grandkids!
